Local residents perceived the local traffic situation in Augustenborg to be a major problem. Through-traffic, heavy vehicles and a dysfunctional one-way system all created an insecure living environment. Measures to address the traffic problems are planned to be implemented in 2006.
The world's first electric street trains were tested in Augustenborg during 2000 to 2001. The train “Gröna linjen" (The Green Line) did improve the public transport opportunities for local residents and was the only realistic link to local services such as health centres, chemists and banks. The electric trains are quiet, emission free and narrow enough to use adapted cycle tracks along short stretches of their routes in order to rationalise travel times. The trains were designed and manufactured locally which generated new employment opportunities. Unfortunately, the route through Augustenborg was not considered to be sufficiently viable to continue after the project.
Car pool
Since 2001 a car pool with cars driven on renewable energy has been available, started and managed by the inhabitants of Augustenborg. Nowadays the car pool is run by Skånes bilpool.
