The area is attached to Malmö's existing sewage system, which is being improved with a plant to extract nutrients and heavy metals from the sludge at the treatment plants so that nutrient can be returned to agriculture and those metals used in the treatment process can be reused.
A large amount of the organic waste produced in the area is transformed to biogas in biogas digestors. The household waste that is not separated for recycling goes into the vacuum waste chutes where the waste is taken to the biogas plant for digestion into biogas which is returned to the housing area. The remaining waste is driven in lorries to Malmö's waste incineration plant, where heat is extracted in the incineration process.
